Every law firm has – or should have – a written set of practice values that its people live by to guide them in delivering high quality legal services to its clients.
At Winthrop Mason Lawyers, our fundamental practice values are:
1. Overriding duty
As lawyers, we are first and foremost officers of the law. Our overriding duty, therefore, is to the courts and the administration of justice.
This means that if there is a conflict between our duty to the courts and our duty to the client, then it is the former that will always prevail.
2. Best interests
We will act in our clients’ best interests at all times (subject only to our overriding duty to the courts and the administration of justice).
We will put their interests, as well as those of the legal profession, ahead of our own personal interest.
3. Excellent service
We will endeavour to exceed the expectations of our clients in all aspects of their legal representation. We know that we will not always succeed with this aspiration, but we will never stop trying.
We subscribe to the belief that “excellence is not an act, but a habit”.
We will conduct our affairs so as to promote high ethical and moral principles, that is, with honesty, integrity and professionalism.
This can sometimes be challenging in a litigious and adversarial environment, but we will always be polite, courteous and objective when dealing with our opponents and other parties (even when they aren’t!).
5. Technical expertise
We will strive to become one of the most sought-after providers of legal services in our chosen field.
We will continue to “sharpen the saw” to enable us to better serve the interests of our clients now and into the future.
